Living Lightly in a Serious World

There’s an old saying that goes “laughter is the best medicine.” When was the last time you laughed so much you could hardly breathe?

Pressure from work, family and finances can cause us to neglect the importance of fun and enjoyment in our lives.

Joy is a word that we are familiar with but I wonder if its familiarity has caused us to miss the fact that joy is an essential part of healthy living.

A couple of weeks ago I was listening to a sermon. It was the funniest message I had ever heard. Now don’t get me wrong the message was important and scripturally sound but it was delivered it in the most hilarious way.

As I laughed at the funny way the speaker described life I felt a huge weight lift off my shoulders. I felt energized and excited. I felt like I had been given an injection of something I did not know I was looking for.

In that moment I became acutely aware for the importance of joy in my life.

Sometimes we can take life a little too seriously and we forget about the significance of joy in our lives.

I take all my roles in life very seriously, sometimes too seriously! There are so many things to think about and issues that concern me that the pleasure of experiencing joy can totally elude me.

However there is an incredible benefit in allowing ourselves to let go of ‘serious’ and embrace joy, including the lighter side of life.

Did you know there are different types of joy?

There is a joy that comes when we experience something fun. This type of joy is great but it is temporary. We experience the joy when we are doing a particular thing or with a particular person but then it can fade as we move to something else.

Then there is the type of joy that that supersedes all others. Scripture talks about this type of joy being our strength, Nehemiah 8:10. This type of joy is complete, with nothing lacking, 1 John 1:4. This type of joy is only found in fellowship with God.

This is the joy that is deeper than all other forms of joy.

The Apostle Paul talks about this exact joy when he is suffering in prison in Philippians. Paul found joy in the midst of a terrible situation because he had embraced the joy of the Lord, which supersedes any situation.

I encourage you to embrace the joy of the Lord today. Enjoy fellowship with Him in prayer, worship and the word and it will fill your heart with a joy that will impact everything else you do in your day.

Once you’ve done that I want to encourage you to embrace the lighter side of life.

When was the last time you watched a funny movie or laughed yourself silly or just decided to let crazy take over for a while? As Proverbs 17:22 says “a joyful heart is good medicine. “ Why not let joy be your medicine today.

Lord,
I am so grateful that You are the source of true joy. Connecting with You brings me joy like nothing else. Please help me to see opportunities today to lighten up and enjoy my life.
Amen
